Auto Start-Stop
When you next come across a stop sign or red light, or join the end of a traffic queue, it won't just be your car that comes to a rest. Auto Start-Stop automatically switches off your engine whenever you're stationary and in neutral, saving fuel and cutting CO2 emissions. Simply depress the clutch and the engine restarts automatically.

Electric Power Steering
Enjoy every journey to the full; every straight, every twist and turn, as Electric Power Steering effortlessly responds to the slightest touch. The conventional hydraulic system has been replaced with a lightweight electric motor which only uses energy when the steering wheel is actively turned. So on straight roads the motor is inactive, saving energy and fuel.

Lightweight Engineering
To make each journey even more effortless, lightweight materials have been introduced across the BMW range to create lighter engines and bodywork. The new materials reduce drag, making the car more responsive and improve handling so you enjoy a more involved drive. And of course, the lighter the car the less fuel you use and CO2 emissions you produce.

Low-friction Fluids
Low-friction Fluids ensure each journey you take is more efficient. Transmission fluid, engine oil and final drive fluid work together in the vehicle to help minimise wear and wasted energy. So your car runs more smoothly, uses less fuel and produces fewer CO2 emissions.

Brake Energy Regeneration
Brake and now you'll no longer just slow yourself down; you'll be helping to keep your car moving. Whenever you apply the brakes, or take your foot off the accelerator and coast, the normally wasted energy is recycled. Brake Energy Regeneration uses this energy to recharge the battery, reducing the demand on your engine, the fuel you consume and CO2 emissions.

Optimum Shift Indicator
Changing through the gears of a BMW has always been part of what makes the driving experience so thrilling. Thanks to Optimum Shift Indicator, you can greatly improve your fuel efficiency too. A dashboard display highlights the best gear to select for the greatest possible economy. Following its recommendation and changing at the right time significantly reduces the amount of fuel you use and the emissions you generate.

Reduced Rolling Resistance Tyres
Heat-resistant, anti-distortion materials in side walls and tread mean tyres will roll further, and further. On straights and in bends, they produce less friction from their contact with the road surface, cutting both the energy and the fuel you use.

Active Aerodynamics
At the beginning of a journey, your engine needs more fuel when starting from cold. So to help ensure every trip you make is as fuel efficient as possible, Active Aerodynamics automatically closes the air vents to help your engine reach its operating temperature faster. This also helps improve aerodynamics, reducing air resistance to cut your fuel consumption even further. The vents are only opened again to allow the breeze to flow through the engine and braking system when cooling is required.
